Who we are

Founded in 2009, the Institute for Young Women Development (IYWD) is a non-profit organization in Zimbabwe dedicated to empowering young women. As a grassroots feminist movement, we work directly with communities in rural and mining areas to build young women's agency and leadership.
Our core mission is to ensure that every young woman has the voice, skills, and confidence to challenge systemic inequality, participate fully in society, and create a just and sustainable future for herself and her community.
To achieve this mission, our work is strategically focused on four interconnected pillars.

Right of way

We envision a society in which every young woman and girl has "HER RIGHT OF WAY"

This is the bedrock of our work. Through transformative feminist leadership schools, intergenerational mentorship, and policy advocacy, we build the consciousness, agency, and collective power of young women. We equip them with the skills and feminist principles needed to challenge oppressive systems and lead with courage and conviction.
We address the urgent threat of climate change by empowering young women to lead in environmental care. Our programs promote climate resilience through awareness campaigns, training in sustainable agriculture, and establishing "Sustainable Homes." We champion renewable energy, seed fairs, and tree planting to ensure environmental and community wellbeing.
We believe economic independence is a cornerstone of women's freedom. This program fosters sustainable livelihoods through business bootcamps, mentorships, and skills training in agro-based enterprises and livestock value chains. We empower young women to achieve financial autonomy, build food security, and challenge economic systems that perpetuate inequality.
We work to ensure young women have a meaningful seat at every decision-making table. By facilitating dialogue, providing training to local government and traditional leaders, and advocating for inclusive policies, we dismantle barriers and create pathways for young women to influence the processes that affect their lives.
